The XC40 is Volvo’s all-new compact crossover, the automaker’s smaller and sportier alternative to its larger XC60 and XC90 crossovers.
Trim Levels
The XC40 is Volvo’s most affordable vehicle and smallest crossover, positioned below the larger and more expensive XC60 and XC90.
2019 XC40 Momentum: The base trim comes well-equipped with five drive modes (Eco, Comfort, Dynamic, Off-Road, and Individual), 18-inch five-spoke silver alloy wheels, high gloss piano black grille, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9.0-inch touchscreen with Sensus Connect with SiriusXM satellite radio, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and three USB ports. Also standard are power adjustable and heated front seats, leather upholstery, LED headlights with Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights, bright roof rails, City Safety emergency automatic braking, automatic steering collision mitigation, and lane keep assist. A less powerful and cheaper T4 base model will make its debut after these XC40 T5 models launch.
2019 XC40 R-Design: Stepping up to the R-Design will get you 19-inch double-spoke matte black wheels, a Sport chassis (versus Dynamic chassis), an R-Design grille, R-Design aluminum inlays, R-Design pedals, a three-spoke R-Design steering wheel with perforated leather, Nubuck R-Design leather upholstery, metal R-Design front tread plates, a black headliner, glossy black roof rails, dual integrated tailpipes, and automatic high beam LED headlights with active bending.
If you choose the Momentum trim, order the Momentum Plus package and your XC40 will also include a high level of interior illumination, a panoramic sunroof, leather comfort seats with Charcoal and Blonde color combinations, a hands-free tailgate opening, dual-zone climate control, and fog lights. The Convenience package offered on both trims includes power-folding rear seats, Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system with adaptive cruise control, wireless smartphone charging, HomeLink integrated garage door opener, grocery bag holder, storage box under the rear seats, and a 12-volt power outlet in the cargo area.
Performance and Fuel Economy
At the beginning of its launch, the 2019 Volvo XC40 will come equipped with the T5 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 engine that produces 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and is backed by an eight-speed automatic that routes power to a standard all-wheel drive system. Later in production, a base front-wheel drive model will be powered by a T4 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 tuned to make an estimated 185 hp and 195 lb-ft and is also backed by an eight-speed automatic. Volvo claims a quick 6.2-second 0-60 mph time for the XC40 and we look forward to confirming this in an upcoming First Test review.
Safety
Like all Volvos, the XC40 comes well-equipped with several driver assist safety features including the City Safety emergency automatic braking system with pedestrian, cyclist, vehicle, and large animal detection. Also standard is an automatic steering collision mitigation system, lane keep assist, run-off road mitigation, and a rearview camera. The Vision package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, a self-parking system, a surround view camera system, and self-folding side view mirrors. Offered in the Convenience package, the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system consists of adaptive cruise control with stop and go functionality and lane centering. A road sign information feature, driver alert assist, and post-impact braking are additional standard safety features.
Technology
The XC40 comes standard with lots of technology including a large 9.0-inch center screen with Sensus Connect, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth and three USB ports for smartphone connectively. A navigation system and a 13-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system are optional. A 12.3-inch instrument panel driver’s display is also standard, and the wireless smartphone charger, automatic parking system, surround view camera system, and Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system are options.
