hunting simulator pc Refuge System Leaders Call for Passion to Address Tomorrow's Challenges

Rick Coleman reminded a crowd of 1,200 conservationists that passion is important.

"We come to work and turn the crank," he exalted. "We need to stop turning that crank sometimes. We need to regain and rekindle our passion for our jobs."

This, among other inspirational messages was one of the prevailing themes shared by Coleman, ARD for Refuges in the Mountain-Prairie Region as he spoke during the Conserving the Future: Protecting Wildlife and Habitat session this Tuesday.

Coleman was joined by Scott Kahan, ARD of Refuges in the Northeast Region, Mark Chase, Chief of the Natural Resource Program Center, Dr. Gabriela Chavarria, Science Advisor to the Service Director and other Fish and Wildlife leaders and partners on stage to address the Refuge Vision document, a new progressive strategic plan for conservation in a changing environment.

The discussion that ensued throughout the program covered many of the topics paramount in the System's new vision document: Conserving the Future: Wildlife Refuges and the Next Generation. From partnerships and land acquisition to improving the effectiveness of the science we use and increasing our accountability as an agency, Tuesday's speakers all exemplified the need for the National Wildlife Refuge System to continue working with others to address the challenges of tomorrow.

Coleman encouraged the crowd to be open to the best ideas, share successes, learn from one another, and continue to adapt as we head forward into the future and tackle issues ranging from climate change to habitat fragmentation, human population growth, limited resources and small staffs. These among others are the issues that we face as an agency and as a system and we must work together in a community effort to develop a common vision to find success as an organization.

"As we get stronger," Coleman declared, "Think more, use our courage and speak up, and as we use our passion to share our thoughts and desires with the rest of the Refuge System and others, we will succeed in the next 15 years."
